Lid lift: diagnose an insert that raises the box lid

Short answer. Lid lift is a closure observation for the full packed box. Compare it with the reference configuration and inspect the layer causing the obstruction.

Establish the reference closure

Place the original packed box on a level surface and note how its lid sits. Record any original gap or uneven corner. The reference prevents a pre-existing box feature from being attributed to a new insert. Take your own side-on photos with a ruler visible if you plan to publish a measurement.

Check the specified packing order

Verify tray orientation, card compartments, loose bags, boards, and rulebooks against the product instructions. Look for a tray that is not seated, a component under a tray, or a board that bridges unevenly. Remove one top layer at a time to identify the obstruction, keeping a record of what changed.

Check the changed configuration

Compare card count, sleeve product, expansions, and promo content with the supplier’s supported configuration. A no-lid-lift statement applies to the conditions the supplier describes. It is not evidence for extra content or a different insert revision. Confirm any missing condition before treating the problem as a manufacturing defect.

Measure rather than press

Record the loaded-lid position at consistent points and compare with the baseline. Describe the ruler placement and uncertainty. Do not press, clamp, or weigh down the lid to obtain a smaller gap. A box that closes under pressure is not the same as a freely resting lid.

Decide how the box will be used

If lift remains, record its presence and evaluate containment for the intended shelf orientation. Separate the question of fitting on a shelf from the question of remaining closed during carrying. A band or external cover changes the configuration and should be assessed separately; it does not establish that the insert itself closes flush.
