Horizontal or vertical storage: evaluate containment

Short answer. Choose orientation box by box. Vertical storage needs a documented containment arrangement; horizontal storage needs usable access and a suitable load arrangement.

Start with the actual packed box

Check that trays, bags, and decks are in their intended locations and that the lid rests normally. Read the insert supplier’s orientation statement for that product version. A generic photo of a shelf does not establish containment inside your game. Treat your chosen orientation as part of the configuration record.

Inspect what holds the components

Identify whether loose components are enclosed by tray lids, bags, the board layers, or another intended feature. Examine gaps between trays and top layers. A box can look tightly packed while still allowing small pieces to move. Do not assume the box lid alone prevents movement inside open trays.

Check gently on a supported surface

Use a controlled change of orientation with the box supported and the contents protected. Stop if closure becomes unstable or components are at risk. Record the procedure and observation. This is a proposed personal check, not proof of suitability for train travel, walking, or rough handling.

Plan shelf retrieval

For horizontal storage, consider how a lower box can be removed without scraping corners or disturbing a stack. For vertical storage, verify the cubby opening and that removing one box does not pull another forward. Follow the exact furniture’s load and anchoring instructions regardless of orientation.

Record exceptions instead of forcing uniformity

Use a different orientation for a box that needs it. Label the shelf location and note whether an external restraint is part of the arrangement. Recheck containment after an expansion changes the top layer or a deck changes height. A single shelf can use more than one orientation while remaining easy to navigate.
