Short answer. Build a reversible packing plan with measured containers, clearly separated component groups, and an intact top layer. Check closure before discarding the original insert.
Preserve the reference arrangement
Keep the original insert and record how the box was packed before changing it. Note any components held beneath a board or in a shaped recess. Removing the insert can create space but also removes its containment and support. Treat those functions as requirements for the replacement arrangement.
Group by the way the game is used
Separate common supplies, player-specific components, setup-only pieces, and optional expansion content. Use the rulebook to identify the component groups without reproducing its artwork or text. Keep concealed or random-draw components in an arrangement that preserves how the game is played.
Measure containers with their lids
Use external container dimensions to plan the box and internal usable dimensions to check the contents. Include hinge and latch projections. If bags are used, account for the closure area and the packed shape. An empty container specification is insufficient when a full lid bulges or a bag does not lie flat.
Create a packing map
Start with the largest rigid items and sketch the layout. Add the necessary boards and rulebooks in their intended positions. Label containers with text rather than copied game artwork. The inventory and label tools help record the layout. Avoid gluing new structures into the original game box during an initial trial.
Check the whole cycle
Retrieve the box, unpack it, use the trays as intended, and repack it from the recorded map. Check closure and orientation after the full cycle. Update the layout when the arrangement proves awkward or leaves components unaccounted for. Convenience remains an observation until you have recorded a comparable timed procedure.
Decision record
| Function of the old insert | Replacement check |
|---|---|
| Separation | Labeled component groups |
| Support | Boards and top layers remain properly supported |
| Containment | Components stay within intended containers |
| Retrieval | Required pieces can be found |
| Closure | Full packed box closes without force |
