Board game card sleeves: size, thickness, and storage

Short answer. Match the sleeve to the card, then check the sleeved card and the full deck against the storage space. Card fit and box fit are separate decisions.

Inventory each card format

Sort the cards by physical size and record the count of each format. Include expansions, reference cards, and promos that you plan to sleeve. Do not assume a game has only one size. Match the publisher’s component information to your copy and measure an actual card when the documentation is incomplete.

Distinguish sleeve size from supported card size

Read how the supplier labels dimensions. Gamegenic’s Matte Standard Size Outer Sleeves page gives a sleeve size of 69 × 94 mm and a supported card size up to 66 × 92 mm. Those are different fields. The example explains terminology; it does not recommend an outer sleeve for every board game.

Try a small sample

Check that a card enters without bending, the corners are not pinched, and the sleeve opening remains accessible. Then check a representative sleeved stack in the tray. Use the actual product and card version. A printed size guide can help identify a candidate, but printer scaling and product revisions make it unsuitable as final fit proof.

Measure storage after sleeving

Use the outside width and height of a sleeved card and the measured height of a representative stack. Include any dividers and extra cards that will occupy the same compartment. Sleeve film specifications are useful context, but seams, finish, and trapped air mean a simple film calculation should not be treated as a guaranteed deck height.

Record the decision

Save the sleeve brand, product code, quantity, declared thickness, and measured stack information in the inventory. If you change the product, treat that as a new configuration. Purchase decisions are more reproducible when the record says what was checked instead of just recording standard sleeves.
