Short answer. Keep game materials away from leak-prone locations, direct light, and obvious heat or moisture exposure. Use manufacturer care advice for the actual materials.
Understand the source boundary
Library of Congress guidance concerns works on paper, not a tested collection of mixed-material games. Its advice on stable storage, light exposure, and careful handling is useful context for rulebooks and paper components. It does not establish a universal humidity target for plastic pieces, coated boards, wooden components, or every game box.
Inspect the storage location
Look for signs of leaks, condensation, direct sunlight, and exposure to radiators or vents. Keep liquids away from stored games. Review the furniture and game supplier’s care instructions. Record location concerns in your inventory so a move is deliberate rather than simply hiding a damaged box elsewhere.
Handle paper components conservatively
Use clean hands and a clean surface. Avoid attaching adhesive labels directly to original paper artwork or using a tight rubber band on paper components. Prefer a reversible identification method on a separate container. If an item is valuable or damaged, obtain appropriate conservation guidance before applying a treatment.
Record observations without inventing causes
Note visible changes, their location, and when they were first noticed. A warped component or a musty odor does not by itself establish the cause or a repair method. Do not prescribe heat, household cleaners, or chemical treatments. Preserve the observation and contact the publisher or an appropriate specialist when needed.
Recheck after changing the location
Inspect the boxes after a move and update the location record. If measuring environmental conditions, record the device, position, period, and actual readings. A single reading cannot describe the entire year. This checklist deliberately avoids a numerical board-game humidity target without material-specific evidence.
Decision record
| Observation | Action |
|---|---|
| Leak or condensation risk | Choose a better location and inspect contents |
| Direct sun or heat exposure | Reassess the placement |
| Damaged paper component | Seek material-appropriate guidance |
| Unknown care requirement | Check supplier documentation |
| Environmental measurement | Record device, period, and real readings |
