How to measure a board game box inside and out

Short answer. Use inside dimensions for insert planning and outside dimensions for shelves and bags. Record the narrowest usable space and the fully packed closure.

Choose the measurement you need

Identify whether you are checking an insert, a shelf, or a travel bag before measuring. Use a ruler or appropriate measuring tool and record its resolution. Pick one unit for the record; millimeters are convenient for small clearances. Avoid mixing a seller’s centimeter dimensions with your inch measurements without converting explicitly.

Measure the usable inside space

Remove removable components and measure the base’s usable width and length at the points relevant to the insert. Note folded cardboard, taper, seams, ribs, and corner intrusions. Measure usable height separately. If a top layer must occupy space above the insert, include that in the packing plan rather than calling the entire box height available.

Measure the closed outside envelope

Pack the intended contents and place the lid normally. Measure the outside width, length, and height, including any lid lift or protective cover. These are the dimensions relevant to a shelf or bag. Do not subtract an assumed wall thickness from an outside measurement to invent an inside measurement.

Describe the axes and uncertainty

Label width, length/depth, and height with a sketch or a photo. Write down where the measurement was taken and whether the value is approximate. If different points produce different values, retain the range and use the relevant constraint. Do not report more decimal places than the equipment and method support.

Check the real placement

A numeric comparison is a useful screen, followed by a physical check where available. Access openings, rounded corners, and removal clearance can prevent an apparently adequate fit. Use the shelf calculator with the measured dimensions and a chosen allowance, then check the actual placement without scraping or forcing the box.
